LOCAL BUSINESS CASE STUDY
Paul and Jodi Smith weren't looking to become technology experts. They were trying to start a storage business.
As longtime Yankton residents, they saw an opportunity to create secure outdoor storage for vehicles and equipment that do not always fit conveniently at home or at a local business. The idea became Red Magic Storage.
Between the original idea and opening the gates, a simple storage concept began generating practical questions. How would customers find Red Magic? How would they reserve a space and pay? What cameras, lighting, networking and Wi-Fi would the site need? How could those pieces work together without creating another full-time job for the owners? That is where another Yankton business, CyberCloak.Tech, became part of the story.

The Security Pulse also moved the discussion beyond the website. Drawing on his technology experience, Steve recommended surveillance cameras, facility lighting, networking hardware, Wi-Fi and other site technology related to developing and securing Red Magic.
Some recommendations addressed security. Others addressed connectivity, customer experience or efficient operation. Instead of treating cameras, payments, networking and web development as separate projects, Red Magic could consider how every decision supported the same business model.
Steve's role was to help Paul and Jodi ask the right questions, evaluate alternatives and make informed decisions as the facility took shape. That advisor and collaborator role connected the digital customer experience with the technology needed at the physical site.
Red Magic was conceived primarily as outdoor storage for boats, RVs, trailers and vehicles. As the concept developed, Paul and Jodi also recognized an opportunity to serve contractors, manufacturers, agricultural businesses and others needing space for equipment, work trailers and commercial vehicles.
Because the systems were designed around how the business operates rather than one customer type, the model has room to evolve. The same website, payment foundation, connectivity and security planning can support both an individual storing an RV and a business managing several pieces of equipment.
A useful starting question for any small business is: What are we trying to accomplish, and what technology actually helps us do it?
The relationship between the companies is direct and should be clear. Paul works alongside Steve through CyberCloak.Tech as a fractional Chief Marketing Officer, while Paul and Jodi own Red Magic Storage. That involvement made Red Magic a practical opportunity to apply CyberCloak's approach to a business being developed from the ground up.
The project also illustrates a broader point for small and midsized businesses. They do not necessarily need more technology. They need technology that fits the work. Depending on the business, that may involve cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, a website, payment processing, networking, physical security or a combination of those systems.
For Red Magic Storage, beginning with the Security Pulse helped turn an idea into a connected physical and digital business in Yankton. The process gave Paul and Jodi a practical way to make decisions, while CyberCloak.Tech and Steve served as technology advisor and collaborator from analysis through implementation.
