Description

Join author with local roots, Naomi Yaeger, for a historical storytelling program based on her book Blooming Hollyhocks: Tales of Joy During Hard Times.
Through readings, stories, and historical context, Naomi shares the experiences of a Midwestern family with roots near Gayville, SD and Yankton, SD who lived through the Great Depression and the WWII home front. Her book tells the stories of children attending a one-room schoolhouse on the Yankton/Clay County line. This engaging program offers a glimpse into everyday life on the Plains—highlighting resilience, community, and the small moments of joy that carried people through difficult times.
The presentation also includes a few familiar folk songs from the era performed by Naomi's husband, Terry, on banjo, along with light audience interaction and trivia. Attendees also get the chance to make a cornhusk doll if they wish!
The public is invited Saturday, April 18 presentation starting at 1:30. The museum is open until 4pm. This is a free-will donation event.
